Portugal Child Benefit: Apply for Abono de Família or Request Reassessment

The right household record and request matter more than an estimate based only on your salary.

Procedure checked against official sources on 2026-10-07. Check live availability before you act.
6 min readWritten by the Finkavo team
Key takeaways
  • Child benefit depends on residence, household resources, age and applicable education conditions.
  • Child and applicant need NISS for the online request; a parent’s account is not the child’s identity record.
  • The current ISS guide distinguishes income years for an existing award, a new 2026 request and reassessment.
  • Child-benefit single-parent increase is 50% under the 2026 order; the prenatal increase is 35%.

Apply through the official child-benefit service, then use Social Security's named Abono de Família action. This is a monthly support for children and young people, not the IRS dependent deduction and not a universal payment to everyone with a child.

Who can receive it?

The child must reside in Portugal or be treated as resident, meet the household income band and asset conditions, and satisfy the work/education rules. The current guide sets the movable-assets ceiling at €128,911.20 (240 times 2026 IAS). This is not the household salary threshold. A holiday-work exception exists for qualifying young people; do not assume all student employment preserves entitlement.

Use the NISS guide for a missing number and SSD access guide for login problems. Online applications require both the child and applicant to have NISS. Foreign-child evidence differs under EU/international coordination and other residence routes; check the current ISS list instead of treating a passport alone as universal proof.

How to request and track abono

  1. Check the household first

In the official portal use Perfil > Agregado e relações familiares to check the relevant record. IRS household data is not a substitute for checking this record.

  2. Choose the named benefit service

Follow Família > Desenvolvimento de crianças e jovens > Abono de Família para Crianças e Jovens > Consultar e pedir Abono de Família e Pré-Natal.

  3. Select the correct request

Under Pedir e consultar, choose Pedir novo abono de família, unless accepting an actual automatic proposal or seeking reassessment.

  4. Submit the requested evidence

Check child, applicant, household, income and representation details. For a counter request, consult RP5045 and the applicable GF54 household forms.

  5. Save confirmation and check decisions

Use Consultar under Ações for status and the separate payments area for payment dates. Answer evidence requests; submission is not approval.

Family allowance services separate reassessment, abono and prenatal requests, school proof and benefit-status declarations
A new abono request, reassessment after an income change, Prova Escolar and a benefit-status declaration are different services. Pick the matching card rather than repeating the original application. Prova Escolar here concerns benefit maintenance, not enrolling a child at school. No family record is shown. Genuine capture, 15 October 2026; menus may change. Source: official service. What income year does Social Security use?

Reference income is the household's relevant annual income divided by the number of children entitled to child benefit plus one. For example, with two entitled children, the divisor is three—not the number of adults and children in the home. First establish the household and which income categories belong in the annual sum; the formula does not turn net monthly wages into an entitlement decision.

ISS Guide 4001 v4.81 distinguishes maintenance of existing awards using 2024 income, initial applications made in 2026 using 2025 income/IAS, and 2026 reassessment using current-year income/IAS. Do not use one table for all three. The reference-income calculation considers the defined household and count of entitled children, not simply take-home salary divided by every person living at the address.

2026 amounts and single-parent increase

For children up to 36 months, ordinary monthly base amounts are €190.98, €161.65, €132.07 and €88.43 for bands 1–4 respectively. Older-child bands differ. The 2026 order increases child benefit for a qualifying single-parent household by 50%; prenatal benefit uses 35%, not the same percentage. These base values are not an approval estimate; age, band and eligible supplements must be checked in the actual decision.

Income dropped: can I change the band?

The current guide allows reassessment when income decreases and at least 90 days have passed since the latest income proof or reassessment. Use Consultar e pedir reavaliação in the official benefit area. The guide says the decision becomes available from the 20th of the following month; this is not a guaranteed payment date. Keep evidence of changed income and correct household composition.

Deadline, missing payment and school proof

For a birth-related income replacement, check parental benefit; child benefit is a different award. For study records and transfers, follow the school enrolment guide. An eligible award may also be relevant to the social energy tariff, whose contract-holder and electricity/gas conditions must be checked separately.

The ISS deadline is six months from the first day of the month following the month entitlement begins, for example birth. Late claims generally start from the month after submission rather than recovering the whole earlier period. For ages 16–24, check the applicable study-level limit and July school-proof obligation. If payment stops, compare the award, school proof, residence evidence, household changes and payment record before submitting another application.

Frequently asked questions

How do I request abono de família online?

Use Social Security's Abono de Família e Pré-Natal service, then Pedir e consultar and the new child-benefit option. Check the household first. Both applicant and child need NISS for the online route.

Can foreign children receive Portuguese child benefit?

Potentially, if the residence/equivalent-residence and other conditions are satisfied. EU/internationally coordinated cases and other foreign-child cases have different document requirements. Social Security assesses the actual status; nationality alone is not the test.

Is child benefit automatically assigned after birth?

Only qualifying automatic-proposal cases follow that route. Read the proposal in the official account and accept or reject by its deadline. Do not assume every newborn, including every foreign child, receives an automatic award.

How much is abono in 2026?

The under-36-month base amounts for bands 1–4 are €190.98, €161.65, €132.07 and €88.43 a month. Older-child amounts and supplements differ. Your actual household band and entitlement must be confirmed.

Is the single-parent increase 35% or 50%?

For child benefit the current 2026 order specifies 50%; prenatal benefit specifies 35%. Do not apply the prenatal percentage to the child's award. The family must satisfy the relevant single-parent conditions.

Can I request reassessment after losing income?

The current guide requires an income decrease and at least 90 days since the latest income proof or reassessment. Use the reassessment action, with current evidence. Changing the household should also be recorded; it is not an automatic payment change.

What is the application deadline?

The ISS guide gives six months from the first day of the month after entitlement starts. If late, payment generally begins in the month after the request. Confirm the entitlement-start event for your family, rather than assuming every case starts at birth.

Why has payment stopped for my teenager?

Check school proof and the eligible study level/age, employment, residence evidence and household changes. The official service lists a July school-proof duty for ages 16–24. Ask about the recorded reason before making a duplicate claim.
