School Enrolment in Portugal: New Arrivals, Transfers and Foreign Records

Start with the receiving school and the right application—not a guess about your child's Portuguese year group.

Procedure checked against official sources on 2026-10-10. Check live availability before you act.

Key takeaways
  • First enrolment, annual renewal and mid-year transfer are different requests.
  • Foreign basic/secondary qualifications are assessed through a school; DGE explains conditional enrolment while equivalence is pending.
  • A portal submission is not confirmation of a school place.
  • Annual deadlines change; a family arriving in October should contact the school now, not wait for next year's normal window.

Use the official migrant education guide to identify the child's education route, then contact the receiving school or use Portal das Matrículas. This guide covers basic and secondary enrolment and practical transfer questions; a foreign certificate is not automatically the same numbered Portuguese year.

Age, compulsory schooling and preschool

The official guide describes compulsory schooling from 6 to 18 and preschool from age 3 as optional. For the normal first-year route it identifies children turning 6 by 15 September. Do not apply that simplified age statement to every early-entry or special situation; confirm the child's birth date and admission rules with the school. Preschool availability, compulsory-school access and recognition of completed foreign years are separate questions. Regional authorities and private/international schools may use different channels, so confirm the institution responsible for your address.

A move may also require separate address changes: use the moving-house checklist. If the family receives support, check abono de família and school proof. A school-place decision and a Social Security award are not the same administrative process.

Foreign records: equivalence and conditional enrolment

For basic and secondary education, DGE directs resident applicants to a public school or a private/cooperative school with the relevant pedagogical autonomy. The application includes the official form and completed-study evidence. Records should identify completed years, course/cycle, final marks and the original grading scale, including the minimum pass mark. DGE requires official Portuguese translation of foreign-language records after the applicable legalisation. An English-language transcript is not automatically exempt.

DGE's FAQ says equivalence can be requested throughout the year and certification is free. Its reference processing time is 30 days after a correctly completed file is received, not a guarantee from the day you first email the school. Some qualifications are referred by the school to DGE. Conditional enrolment is available while equivalence is being processed, particularly within compulsory schooling; definitive enrolment waits for the decision. Do not leave the child at home simply because a general summary says equivalence must be completed first.

If records are missing, explain that circumstance at the first appointment. The FAQ describes exceptional, justified recognition routes and particular measures for refugee/protection situations; these are not an automatic exemption for every new arrival. Ask what evidence and assessment can be used in the child's case. Keep a copy of the file and identify which office or school currently holds it so that enquiries are directed to the decision-maker, not repeatedly sent to unrelated services.

How to enrol and confirm the outcome

  1. Identify the responsible school

Explain address, age, previous education and whether this is initial entry or a transfer. Ask about the competent regional channel when outside the mainland system.

  2. Check the current year's instructions

Use the official portal and receiving school's annual notice. Confirm the relevant year group, renewal exception and required information; don't copy last year's dates.

  3. Request equivalence when needed

Give the original-system records, required legalisation and official translation to the school. Ask about conditional enrolment during assessment.

  4. Submit through the correct channel

Use Portal das Matrículas or school-office assistance as applicable. Save the reference, requested preferences and uploaded-file list.

  5. Confirm placement and follow-up tasks

Read the school's decision and outstanding-document requests. Ask separately about timetable, meals, textbooks, language support and any applicable aid applications.

Arriving now or missing the normal window

For 2026/2027 the national calendar is Despacho n.º 4472-A/2026 (art. 2.º n.º 1): 22 April–1 June for pre-school and the 1st year; 16–29 June for the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th years; 1–13 July for the 2nd to 5th years; 15–22 July for the 10th and 12th years. Renewals are automatic unless the child changes school or cycle, the guardian changes or a curricular option is needed (n.º 2). It is not a calendar for 2027/2028. For a child arriving during the running year, contact the receiving school immediately about initial or conditional enrolment rather than waiting for the next summer window. For an existing pupil, gov.pt permits a transfer during the year through the portal or current school's office. The normal transfer limit is the fifth teaching day of the second term, with a change-of-residence exception.

Portal failure, no place or language needs

If the portal cannot match a guardian or child, preserve the error and contact the school office for the authorised assistance route; do not create a second identity or declare an address that is not yours. Submission does not allocate a guaranteed preferred place. Ask for the decision, missing information and next placement step. Discuss Português Língua Não Materna assessment with the school: language support depends on the pupil's assessed needs and school arrangements, not a guaranteed identical class in every school. Keep enrolment, equivalence and aid references separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enrol a child after the school year starts?

Contact the receiving school now to identify initial entry or transfer and foreign-record assessment. DGE permits year-round equivalence requests and conditional enrolment while the process runs. Do not assume a newcomer must wait for the next annual window.

Where do I request Portuguese school enrolment?

Use the applicable Portal das Matrículas process or the school's administrative office. Confirm the child's year, region and whether this is initial entry, renewal or transfer. The school can explain assistance when the online process cannot be completed.

Are foreign school certificates enough on their own?

DGE requires completed-study evidence with years, marks and grading scale, the applicable legalisation/apostille and official Portuguese translation. The school assesses or refers the equivalence; a foreign certificate does not automatically establish a Portuguese year group.

Must equivalence finish before the child can enrol?

DGE explicitly provides conditional enrolment while foreign-record equivalence is processed, particularly for compulsory-school pupils. Definitive enrolment depends on the final decision. Ask the receiving school to apply the appropriate conditional route.

How long does school equivalence take and does it cost?

DGE says certification is free and gives a 30-day reference after receiving all documents needed for a correctly instructed file. Complex cases or workload can take longer; sending an incomplete first email does not start a guaranteed 30-day countdown.

How do I transfer schools after moving?

During the school year request transfer through Portal das Matrículas or the pupil's school office, stating the actual reason. Gov.pt gives a normal second-term limit with an exception for residence changes. Moving outside the year uses the enrolment process.

Does my child automatically get Portuguese-language support?

Discuss Português Língua Não Materna assessment and the child's learning needs with the school. The official migrant guide describes support, but does not guarantee an identical timetable or class in every school. Ask what the assessed placement provides.

Do I need to submit an annual renewal every year?

Some renewals are automatic, but changes such as school, educational cycle, guardian or course/options can require a request. Check the actual school's current annual instructions rather than assuming last year's automatic renewal covers this year's changes.
