For D7 & D8 applicants
D7 or D8? What changes is your tax bill.
Both visas lead to the same place: Portuguese tax residency once you cross the 183-day threshold, or Portugal becomes your center of life. The visa changes the eligibility rules, not that outcome. What actually shifts is which IRS category you'll file under once you're here — and Finkavo cites the exact CIRS article for each answer.
Honest: Finkavo doesn't help you apply for D7 or D8 — that's AIMA / consulate territory. It starts once you're filing taxes here: which anexo applies, which deadlines you're on, which article backs each answer.
The decision
D7 or D8 — what actually changes
- Built around passive or pension income — savings, rental, dividends, retirement income
- One track: apply directly for the residency permit
- Income later typically maps to Categoria H (pensions), E (dividends / interest), F (rental) or G (capital gains, partial support) — check the current AIMA / consulate income threshold, we don't quote a number here
- Built around remote employment or self-employment income — you keep working for a non-Portuguese employer or client base
- Two tracks: a temporary-stay visa or a residency-permit route, with different minimum-stay implications — which fits depends on your plans; check the current AIMA / consulate requirement for each
- Income later typically maps to Categoria A (employment) or B (self-employment), depending on how you're paid
Either way: once you're in Portugal 183+ days in a 12-month period — or Portugal becomes your center of life — you're a Portuguese tax resident. CIRS Art. 16º applies regardless of which visa got you here. The visa affects your paperwork on the way in; it doesn't change the residency test on the way to your first Modelo 3.
The residency test, sourced:
- CIRS Art. 16º — Tax residency, 183-day rule
- CIRS Art. 1º — IRS categories A–H
- LGT Art. 19º — Fiscal domicile

D7 / D8 FAQ
Does Finkavo help me apply for D7 or D8?
No. Visa applications go through AIMA or your Portuguese consulate — Finkavo starts once you're filing taxes here: which anexo applies, which deadlines you're on, and the article behind each answer.
Does choosing D7 over D8 (or vice versa) change my tax residency?
Not directly. Both visas lead to the same CIRS Art. 16º test — 183 days in Portugal in a 12-month period, or Portugal as your center of life. The visa changes the entry requirements, not whether you become a Portuguese tax resident.
Will I file as Categoria A, B or something else?
It depends on the income the visa was built around. D7 income is typically passive or pension — Categoria E, F, G or H. D8 income is typically remote employment or self-employment — Categoria A or B. Finkavo pre-fills whichever anexo matches once you're actually filing.
What about NHR or IFICI?
Those are separate tax-status questions that layer on top of residency, with their own criteria and rates. Finkavo covers IFICI eligibility as part of its guidance — ask once you're set up and it checks against your profile.
Know the tax answer before AIMA does.
Finkavo doesn't pick your visa. It gets you ready for the filing that comes after — whichever one you land on.
