Cancel a Direct Debit in Portugal: Stop Payments and Request Refunds
Choose the right action for an upcoming payment, an unwanted mandate or money already debited—without accidentally leaving a service contract unpaid.
- Stopping a bank collection does not terminate the service contract or erase a valid debt.
- For consumer SEPA direct debits covered by the payment rules, an authorised payment has an unconditional eight-week refund window from the debit date.
- An unauthorised or incorrectly executed payment is a different claim: notify the bank without undue delay, normally no later than 13 months after the debit.
- Keep the creditor identifier, mandate reference, amount, debit date and written confirmations; business/B2B terms can differ.
To stop a direct debit in Portugal, decide whether you need to block a future collection, cancel the creditor's mandate or recover a payment already taken. These are separate instructions. This guide covers personal household SEPA/Core payments such as electricity, internet and insurance, not a universal refund rule for business/B2B accounts. You make requests directly to your bank or creditor; Finkavo cannot cancel a mandate or decide whether a bill is owed.
Which action do I need?
| Your problem | Next action | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| A collection is due soon | Ask your bank about revoking that specific pending collection and its deadline. | It does not automatically cancel later collections or the service. |
| You want to stop future collections | Inactivate/block the mandate through your bank's supported channel; ask the creditor to cancel the mandate permanently if that is your intention. | A bank block is not contract termination; inactivation can be reversed. |
| An authorised consumer SEPA payment was taken | Request the applicable unconditional refund within eight weeks of the debit. | A refund does not decide a dispute over the underlying invoice. |
| You never authorised it, or execution was incorrect | Report the problem promptly to the bank and identify it as an unauthorised/incorrectly executed transaction. | Do not wait for the eight-week route to expire or treat 13 months as permission to delay. |
How to stop a payment that has not been collected
- Identify the right authorisation
In your bank's direct-debit area or statement, match the creditor and mandate reference to the actual supplier. A familiar trading name alone may not distinguish several contracts. Save the scheduled date and amount before changing instructions.
- Choose one collection or the mandate
Tell the bank whether you are revoking one pending debit or blocking future collections. For consumers, revocation of a direct-debit payment order is normally possible up to the end of the business day before the agreed debit day. Do not assume a weekend instruction or an already processed collection can be stopped in time; ask the bank which route remains available.
- Resolve the creditor instruction separately
Banco de Portugal distinguishes reversible inactivation at the bank from cancellation of the authorisation with the creditor. If you want the mandate ended, send the creditor a written request and retain its acknowledgement. Arrange another payment method for any valid bill that remains due.
- Check the outcome
Keep the bank confirmation and check the next scheduled collection and statement. A button click without confirmation is not evidence that the service contract ended. If another collection appears, send the bank the reference of your earlier instruction and ask it to investigate.
Can I get a direct-debit refund after it was paid?
For consumer SEPA direct debits within the scope of Article 1 of Regulation 260/2012, Article 117(6) of Portugal's payment-services regime provides an unconditional refund right using the eight-week deadline in Article 118. You do not have to prove that the amount was unexpectedly high for that specific route. Ask your bank to confirm the payment scheme if your statement does not make it clear. Do not apply this consumer answer automatically to a company account or a B2B mandate.
For an unauthorised or incorrectly executed payment, Article 112 instead requires notification without undue delay after you become aware of the problem, normally within 13 months of the debit. The maximum period has an exception where the provider did not supply the required transaction information. Different conditions may be agreed for non-consumers; even microenterprises can agree particular non-refundable direct-debit models under Article 117(7). Describe what actually happened rather than selecting the claim category that sounds most favourable.
Under Article 118, the provider has 10 working days after receiving a refund request made within eight weeks. For a SEPA direct debit, the refund of Article 117(6) is unconditional: the provider must refund and cannot refuse (Article 118(3)). A refusal with reasons is possible only for the conditional refund of Article 117(1) — an authorisation that did not set the exact amount, for a debit higher than you could reasonably expect. This is not a promise that every payment dispute is resolved in 10 days. Ask for a written response identifying the rule applied if the bank considers your request outside that route.
Three examples: the same bank button is not always the answer
- Your electricity debit is due tomorrow: contact the bank immediately about the revocation cutoff and notify the supplier if the invoice is disputed. If the deadline has passed, ask about the appropriate post-debit claim. Continue addressing the contract and any valid charge.
- You recognise an authorised personal SEPA debit taken three weeks ago but want it returned: ask for the eight-week unconditional refund and separately decide whether the mandate should remain active. Returning this payment does not make an otherwise valid invoice disappear.
- You find a creditor you never authorised on an older statement: report it as potentially unauthorised immediately. Record when you discovered it and provide the statement reference. A payment being older than eight weeks does not by itself end the separate Article 112 route.
What evidence should I keep?
- The statement entry: debit date, amount, creditor identifier and mandate/authorisation reference; keep enough context to identify the payment.
- The contract or mandate you hold, the invoice and any cancellation or dispute correspondence. Say if you do not recognise or possess an authorisation; do not invent one.
- Your bank request, submission timestamp, case number and response. For an unauthorised-payment report, note when and how you discovered the transaction.
- Written confirmation of any mandate cancellation and, separately, the service-contract end date. Store documents privately; redact unrelated transactions before sharing a copy through a verified support channel.

Editable creditor message, not a bank refund request or contract-termination notice. Replace the brackets and use the creditor's verified channel; this page sends nothing. Do not include online-banking passwords or verification codes.
What if the bank or supplier does not resolve it?
First ask for the bank's written response and keep the complaint reference. Banco de Portugal explains how to complain about a supervised institution; supervision is not a court decision awarding your disputed bill or compensation. A disagreement with the supplier's invoice is a separate consumer-contract dispute. For service termination, use the relevant telecom cancellation or electricity and gas contract checklist. If you are changing banks, our bank-account preparation guide helps you check account services before signing.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cancel a direct debit in Portugal?
For a permanent mandate cancellation, contact the creditor and keep written confirmation. At the bank, inactivation/blocking prevents future collections under that instruction but is reversible. If a particular debit is pending, ask separately about revoking that collection before its cutoff.

Does cancelling a direct debit cancel my internet or electricity contract?
No. The payment instruction and service contract are separate. Follow the supplier's applicable termination process and settle valid final amounts by another method if needed; a bank block does not erase a debt.

Can I request a SEPA refund without explaining why?
For a consumer SEPA direct debit covered by Article 117(6), the eight-week refund right is unconditional. Confirm the payment scheme with your bank. Do not extend that answer to every business/B2B payment or to every type of bank transaction.
Is the deadline eight weeks or 13 months?
Eight weeks from the debit applies to the authorised-payment refund route described here. An unauthorised or incorrectly executed payment must be reported without undue delay after discovery, normally within 13 months from the debit. They are different rights, not interchangeable waiting periods.

Can I stop a debit on the same day?
Do not rely on it. The consumer revocation deadline is normally the end of the business day before the agreed debit day. Contact the bank immediately to learn whether processing can still be stopped or whether a post-debit claim is needed.

Will getting a refund stop next month's collection?
Not automatically. Ask separately whether the mandate remains active and whether you want it inactivated or cancelled. Confirm the ongoing service contract and payment method with the creditor.
